- The opening scene with Baby Herman was animated by Richard Williams, the director of
animation.
- Somthin's Cookin' also has moving background effects and a full orchestral score by the films
composer Alan Silvestri.
? Obscure line. Hey! Who turned out the lights? Boy, it's dark in here... Don't they pay the
electricity?
Raoul J. Raoul, the live action director of `Somthin's Cookin'' is played by Joel Silver. He is
better known for his role as producer of big budget action films such as the Die Hard and Lethal
Weapon films.
? Obscure Dialog. Baby Herman's first lines are reduced to near silence. He just mouths them.
They're in the book of the film:
`That Rabbit can't do anything right! I am so sick of this! That stupid damned Rabbit!'
? Obscure Dialog. Roger's pleas to Raoul - you'll have to check out the script for now.
- The Editor hunched over the moviola is Morgan Deare, the same guy who voices Bongo, the
Ape Bouncer of the Ink and Paint Club.
Other Maroon cartoons: Pistol Packin Possum. Wet Nurse.
The musical chairs outside play Stars and stripes for ever.
Eddie passes an Ostrich ballet dancer while leaving the studio. Mlle. Upanova from the `Dance
of the Hours' segment of Fantasia.
The Hippo ballerina that bumps into Eddie on the steps is also from the `Dance of the Hours'
sequence in Fantasia.
The brooms are dancing to the tune of `Sorceror's Apprentice' and are from that section of the
brilliant `Fantasia'.
The Goblins that get under Eddies feet are from Sleeping Beauty.
* An assistant director can be seen in the red cars window as the camera pans past, identified
by his modern clothing!
XUK: To highlight the pure stupidity of English censors, on one terrestrial showing Bongo's line,
Wise ass was redubbed as Wise chump. D'OH!
The tune being played by Daffy and Donald is Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No.2
Donald is voiced not by Clarence Nash, the original actor who created the voice, but by a
Disney Animator called Tony Anselmo.
Daffy's legs are painted Black in one of the overhead shots.
! Daffy plays the piano using Boxing glove, icecream cones, rubber chikens and hammers.
The penguins serving customers in the Ink and Paint Club are from `Mary Poppins'.
* The sparkles seen on Jessica's dress are not seen again in the rest of the film, due to budget
and time restrictions.
Jessica is voiced by two women. Her singing voice is provided by Amy Irving, Spielberg's wife
at that time. Her talking voice is provided by the un-credited Kathleen Turner.
* As Roger bursts through the window of R.K. Maroon's office the falling glass is actually stuck
to a sheet of plastic. The top edge of this can be seen falling past the hole if you look carefully.
The Acme factory isn't in California at all! It was a derelict warehouse in London, the palm
trees outside were shipped over foe the film.
Yosemite is not voiced by Mel Blanc, but by Joe Alaskey.
! It's 8.10am when Valiant arrives at the Acme Factory.
! The toon shoes are released from a box labeled `Squeaking Shoes'
* As Doom Dips the poor shoe some of his fingers dissappear and reappear. This is due to
innaccuracies in the rotoscoping procees, however the frames the animators worked on were
B&W, making this job a lot harder.
Two of the weasels, Psycho and Greasy, are voiced by the same actor that provides the voice
for Roger. Charlie Fleischer.
There were originally going to be seven weasels, but that number was cut back to five: Smart
Ass, Greasy, Wheezy, Psycho and Stupid
The weasels are said to be derived from the weasel star of Tex Avery's The Sneezing Weasel
(1938). However Wind in the Willows has also been quoted as being the source. Either way,
theyre pretty cool.
X Cut scene: Baby Herman tucks the money to buy his racing form into his sitter's top.
? Obscure Dialog. Smart Ass at Eddies Door.
`Open up, in the name of the law! Come on, we know where you are. We know you're in
there... Open the door valiant... Don't make us play rough Valiant, we just want the rabbit!
X Cut scene. After Dolores says, Where are you going? Eddies reply of Back to the office was
dubbed in during post production. He in fact goes to Jessica's dressing room and breaks in, He is
captured by doom and dragged off to Toontown where a pig's head is painted onto him. He
staggers back to his office and has just removed the mask with Turps when he emerges half
dressed to find Jessica in his office...
This large sequence was editted out as the dead line was brought forward and certain key
sequences were not completed in time.
? Obscure Dialog. Roger's Song. (Film Version)
`I'm not that debonair,
I'm just a silly hare!
If you want class,
I'll have to pass,
So go get Fred Astaire!'
Yeah, he's good, but can he do this? Brblblbrbl! Eat your heart out Ginger Rogers!
`Oh, Roger is my name,
And laughter is my game!
Come on, cowpoke,
It's just a joke!
Don't sit there on your brain!'
Whoo-hoo-hoo! Nice shirt! Who's your tailor? Quasimodo? Whoo-hoo!
`My buddie's Eddie V
A sourpus, you'll see,
But when I'm done,
He'll need no gun,
Cause a joker he will be, C...'
...D, F, G... H... I!
`I-I-I-I-I... love to raise some Cain!
Believe me, it's no strain.
It feels so great
To smash a plate,
And look, there is no pain!
When Roger is giving his speech about the importance of laughter, he is standing on a Soap Box,
litterally.
? Obscure Dialog. You're gonna end up dead just like your idiot HYENA cousins. Well I think
it's obscure!
? Obscure Dialog. Roger: That was quick thinking Eddie! Nuthin like using the ol spine flower,
the wise noodle, the smart puddin.
Benny the Cab is also voiced by the multi-talented Charlie Fleischer.
* During the chase sequence Eddie is substituted by a stunt drawing in many of the scenes!
? Obscure Dialog. The News Reel!
In Atlantic City, the Shriners' March. Wearing their fezzes and bright uniforms, they
parade before a hundred thousand spectators as a highlight of the Shrine Covention.
That's the gay side. There's a serious side when imperial potentate George H. Row of
Buffalo urged all shriners to help halt the spread of Communism.
Many cities are represented in the march, and many temples, as the Imperial Council
meets once again.
It takes a steady eye and a stout heart to heave knives at the apple of your eye but this
female William Tell has no qualms and plenty of faith.
A near miss. But this miss says that's as good as a smile.
Dateline: Hollywood, California. Clover leaf oil was on the move this week, acquiring two
Hollywood institutions. The Pacific Red Car Trolley line, and the venerated Maroon
Cartoon Studios.
Here R.K. Maroon is seen clinching the deal with Cloverleaf's bankers and execs in one
of the biggest ever real-estate deals in California history. Three and a half million dollars
for a laugh fctory - and that's no joke.
X Cut Scene! After the scene where Eddie and Dolores nearly kiss, and before Roger and
Eddie head to the Maroon studios, there was a scene filmed where Eddie explains his hunch
about Maroon to Dolores, and heads towards a phone. This was the very last scene filmed, but
it never made it to the final version.
! Eddies fords registration: 2C 49 74
! Jessica's Car. 9H 31 65
XUK: On all but one occassion, the part where Maroon reveals his plans to blackmail Acme
have been cut from terrestrial showings due to his use of the word bastard, confusing viewers
no end.
! The plaque on the inside of Eddies Toon Gun case is:
Thanks for getting me
out of the Hoosegow.
Yosemite Sam
? Obscure Dialog: Here are the words to `Smile Darn ya Smile. It was sung by the animation
crew!
`Smile, darn ya, smile!
You know this whole world
Is a great world, after all!
Smile darn ya smile!
And right away
Watch Lady luck
Pay you a call.
Things are never black as they are painted.
Time for you and joy to get aquainted.
Aint life worth while?
So, Smile, darn ya smile!
Characters outside Eddies Car: The Reluctant Dragon.
The character riding the Fire Truck is Mr. Toad.
Snow white can be seen selecting apples with the witch. Hard to see on video.
Conversly, the seven dwarves emerge from the subway on the left of the screen.
Droopy Dog is voiced by Richard Williams, the animation director of the film. Apparently he
voiced him during storyboards and got the job!
Look out for Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote waiting for the elevator as Eddie and Droopy
Speed Past.
! There is a shoe tree outside Lena Hyena's room.
Lena Hyena (Toon Hag in the credits) is voiced by June Foray, who also provided Wheezy's
voice. She provided the voices for some classic Warner Brother shorts, including the Granny
from the Tweety and Sylvester cartoons.
! Just before Eddie's plummet eathwards you can see words scrawled on the wall: `For a good
time call Allyson Wonderland. The best is yet to be... ' Number?
Bugs and Mickey appear on screen together for the first time ever.
Bugs and Mickey are supposed to be on screen for the exact same number of frames.
* As Eddie tears up the center divide on the road and throws it against the wall, it continues to
move with the camera as it pans left.
! Sign reads Porkies all beef sausages.
* Dooms eyes pop out as he reinflates him self. Um... shouldn't they have been crushed?
XUK: In the UK the part where Doom reveals that he killed Eddies brother has been cut from
the film onall but one of it's terrestrial showings, confusing viewers no end. Too scary???
As the dip mobile crashes into Toon town the trees in the background are from Disney's first
ever colour cartoon, Trees and Flowers.
Cameos include: Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Goofy and Donald. Daffy and Bugs. Snow White,
Dumbo, Bambi, Pinochio, Coco the Clown. Tweety and Sylvester. Marc Anthony. Peter and the
wolf. And of course.... Porky Pig and Tinkerbell.
* Several characters appear at the end that technically speaking did not exist in 1947:
Marvin the Martian
1948
Haredevil Hare
Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner
1949
Fast and Furryous.
Sam Sheep Dog.
1953
Don't give up the sheep.
Tinkerbell
196?
Peter Pan
* The background of toons were drawn on specially wide cells to enable the pan shot, and used
a circular animation loop.
Porky Pig closes the film with his famous Phrase `That's all Folks.' Mel Blanc, the man who
voiced him and most of the other WB toons died in 1989. The year following it's release.
There were 492 names in the credits.
It was the most expensive movie made up untill that time.
It won four Academy Awards.
A large proportion of the cast is in fact British.
Eddie Valiant - Bob Hoskins
RK Maroon - Alan Tilvern
Marvin Acme - Stubby Kay
